India-born designer Saikat Biswas really flexed his design muscle to create the Obligatory Designer Clock. It doesn’t have any hour and minute hands; instead, the hour markings dynamically change to show the time.
From 03:00 – 03:59, the 3rd marking slowly fills up by the minute. At 04:00, the 4th marking appears and fills up.
To see it in action, check out the time-lapse video on the left. Too bad it’s only a concept…

Brilliant!
this is amazing! perhaps instead of a digital display there could be a blue system of ridges and the circle on top with a slit could spin over it. nonetheless, very cool!
Amazingly #genius.
If he were to give the minute bar a rainbow of colors instead of the monochromatic blue you could easily tell intervals of ten minutes without needing markings on the face of the clock itself.
I confess though that it wouldn’t be as minimalist then.
Indeed. I rather like the concept, but if we were to tone down the fanboy knee-jerk reflex just for a second here – a clock is a minimalist setup on its own. It’s simple to use, easy to learn and I really see no point of re-learning how to use it – no matter how thorough the design. We see this all of the time – designers who redefine the design of the clock since there obviously exists no way of modifying the function, or parameters. Seconds are still seconds, even if you represent them differently. Therefore, there’s nothing “brilliant” about it save the actual design. And given the fact that the product isn’t in production, this goes even further to strenghten my conviction that this is a throw-away concept, concieved from love of design, not function – and therefore, much more an ego-caressing personal project than a truly minimalist feat.
What Art said, except with this idea thrown in: who gives a crap about what something really is? really?
His statement in of itself was, I believe, based in ego.
So why not? In the words of a wise band, “It’s all crazy! It’s all false! It’s all a dream! It’s alright…”
Oh, nice clock btw.
I like the graph.
Cool! Where can i buy one?
I can not wait to come out to buy it, I’ll build one NOW!!!!
