Minimalissimo

Designed by Chinese-born, German-based Yiran Qian, the Eye of the Storm is a very simple, and minimalist watch.

The most obvious feature is the absence of the watch face, assuming this is not necessary to read the time. As you press the button on its side, two lights come up indicating the time in analog format. I love it.

Yiran Qian says:

A storm can be a violent, destructive natural catastrophe. But at the centre of a swirling storm is a core of calm and quiet – the eye of the storm. This watch design was inspired by the eye of the storm. At its centre is a void. The time moves around the void.

2010 winner of the Red Dot Design Award, Qian’s watch is still just a concept. Stay tuned for further information.

  1. Awesome. Just leave the lights on (no button pushing to view the time) and it would be perfect.

  2. Kinda silly looking.
But I guess it was an interestingidea to them at the time.

  3. No, no, no, for the love of God: No – more – concept – watches! What’s this Creative Suite-generated mischief doing here? Have designers no better ideas than these sophmoric efforts aimed at re-envisioning one of the most obsolete accessories of late?

Listen to the motivation: “The design was inspired by three factors: many people are sensitive to the metal parts of watches (especially in combination with sweat); reading the time on a watch does not actually require the centre part, so valuable material can be saved; and such a design could be considered unique and attractive.”

This is absolute rubbish. For one, allergy-free watches are more or less assumed by now – and if you really want to save on materials, then don’t make another junk product altogether (do we really NEED another design for a watch on this earth?). And lastly, don’t presume to tell me what I should or should not consider unique and attractive. Bah! Epic, epic, epic fail.

  4. Amazing, cliché wannabe philosophy ‘n all.
Minimalism, hm. I’m starting to hate this word, so god d*mn hard to define. Would you say minimalism could equal downgraded, primitive and just plain dumb?
If this watch is minimalism, then call me a modernist from now on.
