1px Clock is an iPhone app that shows time, ticking away one pixel per second.
Each square is built up of 60 rows of 60 pixels: one for each second. As such, one square represents one hour, and the total of 24 blocks make up 1 day.
1px Clock was developed by Japanese web design firm E-Bird, and is available as a 6×4 version and a 2×12 version. Download the 1px Clock here (free!).
No iPhone? It’s also downloable as a screensaver. (Thx, Derek!)

Too bad it shows the time as we were in Japan
To bad their entire site is made in flash..
That’s kinda neat.

I’m a tad confused. Does the app override the default clock on the home screen? Or do you actually have to open the app to find out the time? If it’s the latter, it would be rather pointless. Anyone downloaded it yet?
Yep. You need to open the app to show the time. But that works for a lot of people that leave their iPhone/iPod touch docked a lot.
Derek, what would be a cool thing to try is to fill each hour square with second pixels _randomly_… this way glancing at the average shade of gray of the hour will one a good idea of how far along the hour is.
Ah, uhm. Derek’s not the app’s developer. My bad. Still might be a good idea to try if anyone is up for it.
Actually your idea is really interestingthough. Another idea I had that spawned from yours is that each square fades from white to black (or vice versa) with 0 minutes being pure white and 60 minutes being pure black.
I could easily try this out in Processing. I think.
Ohh, that’s good. And you could start fading out the pixels of the next hour even before current hour is out. This should allow for a smooth and gradual deterioration of pixels without making an hour change significant. Just separate hours with an empty space to assist with reading the time.
An idea for another variation
