CD Player

Once again, we are going to talk about the top Japanese industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa. In this case, about his wall mounted CD Player, designed for MUJI in 1999. It is a modern classic part of the MoMA New York’s permanent collection.

It is a really compact CD Player where the speakers are built into a body reduced to the minimum dimensions. Controls are on the top and it has simply a cable to pull for playing.

And as typically found in Japanese design, each detail has great finishing.

  1. Had it years ago in an appartement in France. It’s great, though there are problems reading disks with thick layer of print on it (if you use sticker for your selfmade CDs for example). The most impressive thing is that the cord to turn it on is also the cord for getting power.

  2. Great design, but the sound.. Sure the sound might do fine as background sound while cooking dinner or something, but as a stand alone CD player, no thanks.

I wish Naoto Fukasawa would design a new version with two additional rectangle wall mounted speakers. Would be a great wall piece, like a painting.
