Continuing his research into the meaning and use of colour in objects, Sebastian Bergne has made a small studio edition of a contemporary Colour Nativity set. Each of the characters is a minimal wooden block that is recognisable by it’s colour, proportion and place in the composition.
Bergne says: The project makes use of our learned experience from exposure to thousands of images, toys and christmas cards over the years.
The hand made and painted beech wooden blocks are stored in a box that completes its character as a toy set with a difference. This signed and numbered studio edition of 6 sets are available only through Sebastian Bergne website.

Nothing like a bit o’ high-art pretentiousness to get you into the holiday spirit.
I like the humor behind this design. If I observed Christmas – this would be the set I’d display, hands down.
This doesn’t strike me as pretentious. What is the pretense? I think it’s a wonderful abstraction, especially insofar as it allows us to focus on the significance of the story and look beyond the signifier(s).
Properly arranged and forewarned, it works.
Gotta wonder whether someone would get it without being told what it signifies.
Malevich would be proud. I approve.
Thank you for your comment, Malevich is my hero ;-)
Amazing, works perfectly. Even more minimalistic that this origami one I did. http://flic.kr/p/atSvvx
