Stuttgart City Library

Korean architect Eun Young Yi was declared the competition winner in 1999 for the new central library of the city of Stuttgart from 235 competition entries. The opening ceremony took place recently after three years under construction and a 80-million Euro budget.

The building is essentially a white cube with two underground floors and nine above. The main library floors circle an open-plan design, which are connected through open staircases, and the books are stored mainly in racks mounted to the walls.

I really like the striking first impression of the large white interior with the great luminosity and the range of colours from the many book covers in the racks.

  1. molto e bella!elegante e pulita nelle forme

  2. > the books are stored mainly in racks mounted to the walls

Wouldn’t this drastically reduce the capacity of the library?

  3. Great building. As Ales suggests, it seems very extravagant, but I love the idea of leaving the books to be the decoration of the building; all on view and no distractions.
I also want to add that this site gives me more pleasure than any other. It is consistently wonderful. In a tricky world it is a reliable source of joy. Grazie.

  4. very clean, like mockup….

  5. Eye candy, not brain candy. The books are indeed a decoration, not a purpose. Sure it looks great, more an homage to past paper in a present era of networking where the entire contents of this library could be stuffed in a single shoebox of digital storage. It’s a lovely finish to the era of books per se.

  6. wonderful
