The most important thing is the nature of the item, its essence.
This is the way Jean Nouvel describes his project Flying Surface, because he thinks of this piece more as luminous object rather than a luminaire, looking for the essence of light.
Flying Surface has been developed for the illumination company, Troll in 2006, and it is essentially made with a stretched fabric and produces a floating-like surface when its inside light is switched on.
I think that this is perhaps the most minimalist lighting design that can be made. What can be more simple than a surface of light without anything else?

I was recently introduced to AGFronzoni.com, which celebrates the life and works of Italian minimalist designer, architect and teacher, AG Fronzoni.
In 1962, Fronzoni designed this attractive light fitting, Quadra. Made from steel with a white, black or polished finish, Quadra can be installed on brick walls or ceilings, and measures just 8.66″ x 8.66″. The lamp was nominated for a Compasso d’Oro in 2004 and is manufactured by Italian lighting company Viabizzuno.
With its simple form as a perfect square, and soft lighting, I think it’s a fine example of the great work Fronzoni has produced over the years.

Created by Spanish designers CrousCalogero for Estiluz, the Balloon Lamp is a very simple, clean and playful lighting fixture, pleasing children and adults alike.
Emitting a soft and warm light, the lamp’s shade is made of satinized polyethylene, a translucent material that hides an energy saving fluorescent bulb. A thin red cable hangs subtly from the shade, serving as a switch in the wall version (a ceiling option is also available).
It’s the perfect fixture for a young one’s room, but also for a couple’s alcove or a modern living room. Seeing it in person immediately made me smile (and desire one for myself)!

Hoop is a pendant lamp recently designed by the Belgian lighting manufacturer tossB.
I think they have designed a smart and simple product using a flexible LED strip, which hides inside the steel ring. The result offers a great softness through the indirect light created, dispersed by the surface.
It is finished in a matte white paint, can be equipped using RGB full-color LED’s and available in 16W, 45W and 90W.

Miss is an LED suspension lighting fixture, designed by Davide Groppi studio. Its slim and simple form (the item is only 1.25 inches in diameter) is able to deliver dramatic effect. Balancing between light and shadow, this poetic piece gives targeted concentrated illumination to objects and surfaces. Used in groupings, Miss is able to create an even stronger impact.
I like how the beam of light is stretched out of a slender tubular shape, becoming part and expansion of it. An understated piece, purposely reduced to a single line, gives depth to the space it occupies. The lamp comes in matte black and white.

2D LED Pendant is a new design by the young and great German studio DING3000, for the Italian label Skitsch.
The design is reduced to the outline of the archetypical pendant lamp. The illumination comes from two LED strips that are fitted in the structure and covered with an opal spreading.

Ville Kokkonen designed for Artek the WHITE collection of four bright-light fitting, recently launched at the Milan International Furniture Fair and Lighting Exhibition 2011. WHITE is an outcome of Artek Studio’s in-depth research on the use of light fittings in domestic, office and public spaces.
In common light fittings, with their design and colour, are the stars on stage, and light gets sidelined. With WHITE Kokkonen wanted to bring a new perspective on how we perceive lighting. Now it is time for white light to take center stage!
The collection consists of BRIGHT WHITE 1 (a, light-therapy certified, bright light table lamp), WHITE 2 (a standing and wall light), WHITE 3 (a suspended light) and WHITE 4 (a table light).

Spanish architect Ramón Esteve has designed the Link lighting for the manufacturer Vibia.
It stands for an interesting system that suggests the daylight entering through a skylight.
This modular design provides an architectural dimension to the object and is adapted to spaces of varying size and geometry. The system consists of four modules of different sizes and depths that combine in unlimited ways and orientations. The modules are electrically connected together.
Here is a description from Vibia producers:
Like the skyline of a great city… The modules of the Link lighting system allow you to create silhouettes and volumes on the ceiling to suit every room and every location.

Belgium-based architect and designer Bart Lens from Lens°ass architects designed a new track lighting system called On Line.
It consists of recessed and surface mounted LED fixtures, and uses magnets to connect the various types of fixtures to the track.
Constructed using abstracted geometrical forms makes these fixtures blend in with the architecture. Giving a very minimal visual impact on the surrounding space.
On Line will be produced by Eden Design.

The Top lamp series is the first mass-produced design by Tham & Videgard Arkitekter for Zero.
Top lamp has a simple design made out of a sheet of metal, folded into a pyramid-shape. To diffuse the light, it uses a layer of translucent plastic.
Interestingly, the designers gave the user an original and very simple way to personalize each lamp. Just tilt one of the corners with a wire to direct the light in different angles and get different effects.
Top lamp is available in black or white.
