Cards by Sam Dallyn

Oxford based designer and art director Sam Dallyn recently created these beautifully minimal playing cards as a personal project. Although only five bespoke packs have been made, I have no doubt there could be demand for production.

Dallyn explains:

The reason I made them is simple. I wanted to distill a more simplistic form to the traditional playing cards.

That is exactly what he has achieved here whilst also making each card more easily identifiable, regardless of shying away from the traditional black and red colours. I would only question whether the name of each suit is a necessary inclusion in the design.

Kwartet

Kwartet is a modified version of the age-old Dutch card game Kwartet (which is not unlike the game Go Fish), in which the objective is to collect a complete set of four cards per given category.

This version, which uses contemporary artworks grouped by theme, was conceived by Dutch artists Marijke Appelman and Koen Taselaar. They asked Tymen Cieraad and Jaap de Maat of Studio Joep Jacobs to take care of the design.

Kwartet was produced in a limited edition of 300 decks. Cost of one deck: $ 35 (Hey, it’s art! ;-)

White-on-white/black-on-black playing cards

Even though I am really not a fan of card games, these all-white or all-black playing cards made me look.

They may not be the most practical (especially in lower-light interiors), but they sure are mighty stylish. Want! (Thx, Morgan)
