A particular illustration of Beck’s work I would like to share with you today is the quite wonderful and minimal Form Surface collection. This quiet, yet deliberate collection of line drawings and paintings displaying subtle gradients of soft and subdued tones, include the application of poured oil, graphite on aluminium, linen and paper. Form Surface in my opinion, strongly reflects Beck’s manifesto:

I believe white to be the most inherently beautiful colour as it carries with it the potential to simultaneously expose and negate space.

I believe black to be the most innately powerful colour as it is defined by the presence of light as well as by the absence of light.

There’s not a single piece in this collection that fails to impress me, but what do you think?

Kelly’s current exhibition located at the Museum Wiesbaden in Germany is devoted solely to his work in black and white. His black and white works now account for about one-third of his extensive oeuvre and provide information about the stages of his artistic development since the late 1940s. The artist has closely collaborated with Haus der Kunst to present a selection of 50 paintings and reliefs, supplemented by drawings and photographs.

This stunning and minimalist exhibition runs from 2 March to 24 June 2012. How I’d love to pay it a visit.

I am completely blown away by the subtle beauty of the colour balance. The object looks like a pink pencil drawing suspended in the air. People reportedly gasp upon seeing the work, which surprises me not one bit.

One of his more notable works is this mammoth sculpture, Snake, a trio of steel blades that create a curved path. It is permanently located in the largest gallery of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. In 2005, the museum mounted eight of Serra’s sculptures to create a collection entitled The Matter of Time, and Snake has now become an addition to that collection.

I had never previously written about sculptures before, but I find Richard Serra’s work really inspiring and powerful. And if you enjoy this you can also check another of Serra’s posts.

Made from laser-cut sheet metal, which is then bent and dipped in glossy white PVC, the chairs together represent the smooth metamorphosis from a relaxed lounge chair to an upright kitchen chair, which includes changes in seating height and backrest angle.

From the concept to the chair designs themselves, I really enjoy this.

Influenced by the redwoods in Santa Cruz and the simple, reductivist and minimalist setting of the Buddhist temple in Japan, where she was raised, Ando’s paintings typically consist of steel, patina, pigment, and automotive lacquer. The result is unique, refined and subtle artwork.

Ando explains why she enjoys working with steel:

The innumerable shades of grey within the material has always transfixed me. I think it is quite elegant and refined. The steel is a cornerstone of strength and permanence and yet all things are transitory. It’s really interesting to get it to go in these unexpected ways.

There’s very little doubt in my mind that Ando’s works on steel canvas are post-minimalism at its best. Beautiful.

Doug Wheeler (b. 1939) is a pioneer of the so-called “Light and Space” movement that flourished in Southern California in the 1960s and 1970s. His works appeared in such venues as Tate gallery, London (1970), Salvatore Ala Gallery, Milan (1975), Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (1983), Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao (2000) and many others.

The installation I saw on the weekend was ambiguously titled SA MI 75 DZ NY 12. It is a large scale exhibit that brings you as close to stepping into the void as a person can get without enduring any imminent danger. You enter the white oblivion and walk toward what you know is the back wall. The shape of the room and the special way it is lit eliminate any depth perception. You feel that your eyes are failing you, all you can see is the infinite whiteness. The experience is thrilling and unsettling at the same time. People’s reactions to the room vary. Some linger on the edge, some freeze in the middle, some reach out, trying to feel the space around them. I kept going forward, and eventually my feet felt the curve. And this was the moment when I saw the room for the first time, its size, its shape, its texture. It was quite a discovery! The light in the room changes gradually from bright to dark in a 32-minute cycle, so you can test your senses within fluctuating light modes.

These minimal illustrations, measuring 30cm x 50cm, successfully present a reduction of visual elements without compromising the space and shape of the landscapes.

I think individually these wouldn’t produce the desired impact, but as a collection, would make for wonderful wall art.

To me, the sun is the ultimate source of light, so it only seemed natural to pursue that source – Cahan explains.

Using four different cameras ranging from 6 x 7 film to digital he explores the magical light during a sunrise or a sunset. The magic light reminds me of early flights and makes me want to plan new trips to discover places I have never been before.
