We can own many desk accessories that can better assist and organise our working processes and environment, each with varying degrees of importance, but one such accessory is the desk lamp—a true staple of any setup.

Michael Anastassiades is a London-based industrial designer specialising in the design and manufacturing of high-quality lighting and objects—all with a distinctive minimalist approach. Although the majority of Anastassiades’ work revolves around his ever-evolving Mobile Chandelier collection, his latest design is one that is a little less delicate, but no less beautiful.

Primitive Structure is Anastassiades’ first task light. Simply stacked in a T-shape are two geometric rectangular forms of black anodised aluminium. The point where they rest is the point of rotation, allowing for a sequence of dimmable light that alternates on a 180 degree pivot. The task light is wireless, which allows the user the flexibility of placing it in any possible location. This minimalist lamp has a battery life of eight hours and can be recharged by USB.

Michael Anastassiades founded his studio in London in 1994. He trained as a civil engineer at London’s Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine before taking a Masters degree in industrial design at the Royal College of Art. His work is featured in permanent collections at the Museum Of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, the MAK in Vienna, the Crafts Council in London, and the FRAC Centre in Orleans France.
