Frank Gerritz is a sculptor. A sculptor, however, who for years has developed his sculptural ideas principally in the form of drawings that nonetheless emanate a markedly space-encompassing energy.

For the past two decades, Gerritz has applied layers upon layers of graphite using soft Faber Castell 9B pencil marks on walls, paper and, as is the case in this instance, industrially manufactured MDF panels. The deceptively black appearance springs alive as the colour of the surrounding light is cast back by the densely pigmented sheen of the graphite; the different hatching results in a precise mesh of lines that lends the painting's initial structure.

The artist has two forthcoming exhibitions at Bartha Contemporary in London and the Sleeper Gallery in Edinburgh — the result of a four year long conversation conducted over the phone and during meetings at his studio, which informed the compositional framework for the works in these two complementary exhibitions.
