The idea of archiving a design is very risky, as it overlooks the ephemerality of contemporary trends and movements. However, when a designer is able to deconstruct elements of past designs and elevate them to fit with modern contexts, the designer will be able to create an unmatched timelessness.
931 is one such timeless product. Designed by Dieter Rams in 1963—yet never released—the bag is now realised through a collaboration with fine bag label TSATSAS. Initially as a present to his wife, the design was a one-off. However, through the research of Esther and Dimitrios Tsatsas, the new design is brought back; it is being adapted to modern times with a detachable shoulder strap and a brand new interior lined with blue lamb Nappa leather, yet still keeps the fundaments that Rams himself had injected.
As up-to-date today as it was in 1963, it effortlessly bridges five decades of design history.Architectural and geometrical, the bag exudes a feminine masculinity. Every stitch carefully adorns the contours, creating a never-ending guidance on the continuous leather surface.
The 931 bag is handcrafted in a traditional leather workshop in Offenbach/Main. The model is available in black and in grey calfskin with silver details.
